Make JNet your Start Page

Save a lot of time searching the web by making JNet your home page.

It is very easy -- and very important -- that you change your Start Page.  This is the page you will always see when you start surfing and the page you will always return to every time you press Home.  Many journalists use their media company as their start page -- not a good idea. These pages are designed for the public, not you.

Below are instructions for making JNet your start page. If you are not sure what browser you are using, click here for a Browser Check.

Netscape 4.0 (Netscape Navigator):

If you are running the newest version of Netscape, here's what you do:

  1. Click on Edit, then Preferences. A dialog box opens up

  2. Click on Navigator

  3. You'll see a white slot where your current home page is typed in. Just change that address to http://www.journalismnet.com

  4. Click OK

Netscape 3.0 (Netscape Communcator):

If you have an older version of Netscape,(Netscape 3.0 or less) here’s what you do:

  1. click on "Options"

  2. click on "Preferences" within Options ("General Preferences" in Netscape Navigator 2.0)

  3. choose "Styles" ("Appearances" in Netscape 2.0)
go to the line "Start with" and click on the circle marked "Home Page Location"

  4. Then, in the white space, erase whatever address is there and write in exactly the URL address of JournalismNet:  http://www.journalismnet.com

  5. Click on "OK" and exit.

  6. Then click "Home" on your browser's navigation bar at the top of your page

Internet Explorer 4 or 5:

1.From the View menu, select Internet Options.

2.Click the General tab.

3.In the text box under Home Page type: http://www.journalismnet.com

4.Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

5.Then click "Home" on your browser's navigation bar at the top of your page

Internet Explorer 2 or 3:

1.From the View menu, select Options then the Navigation tab.

2.Select Start page from the dropdown list.

3.In the text box under Home Page type: type http://www.journalismnet.com

4. Click the OK button at the bottom of the dialog box.

5.Then click "Home" on your browser's navigation bar at the top of your page

From now on, every time you start your computer on the Net, you will automatically go to JournalismNet. And every time you click the "Home" button on your browser, it will bring you back to your personally-selected Start page. Consider it a safe port in the often confusing Internet sea.

Of course, you can change your starting page anytime you want simply by following the above procedure.

Whatever you do -- be sure to choose the best Start Page. What happens when you click on your Internet icon and log on to the Net if you don't make any changes? The browser  will automatically start your surf from a page that was programmed into your system.

From home, this will usually be the web page of your Internet provider. It usually has their corporate logo, some software to download and suggested Web sites. At work, some news corporations program their computers to start at the media company’s home page.

The problem with most of these pages is that they may be fine for the general public but they are not fine-tuned enough for journalists. You want the best possible launchpad for your Internet work, so that every time your open your computer, you are at a web page that first of all you are familiar with and second, has very helpful links to the most useful journalism sites on the Web.
