Canadian databases - where to find them:

  • J-Net's list of Canadian databases General, economic, legal and social databases
  • Michael O'Reilly's Canadian databases Extensive list of Canadian resources
  • Statistics Canada's limited online databases. These tables are not downloadable, but it should be possible to cut and paste the html files and convert them into spreadsheet files. The data is of a summary nature, dealing with wide swaths such as exports of commodities. More detailed data can be obtained from Statistics Canada on request, sometimes at a cost.

Canadian Databases - Ready for download:

  • The National Pollution Release Inventory. Comprehensive databases from 1993-1996 (latest year) detailing the release of pollutants into the air, water and ground by companies in Canada. The databases are available online for download and use in a database manager. Already used by the Toronto Star for stories on pollution in the Great Lakes.
  • Ontario campaign contribution    Ontario journalist Patrick Cain has compiled information into spreadsheets which he is making available for dowload and use by other journalists.
