Colorado Public Records
State Level Information
Designed as a series of laws to specifically guarantee and protect the public's right to access of public records, the Colorado Open Records Act or CORA for short. First put in place in 1969, the set of laws applies to all levels of government within the state.
According to the Colorado Revised Statutes 24-72-202 (6)(a) a public record is thusly defined: "all writings" that are "made", "maintained", "kept" or "held" by entities that are subject to CORA "for use in the exercise of functions required or authorized by law or administrative rule or involving the receipt or expenditure of public funds".
Those requesting access to public documents are not required to present a reason or purpose for requesting public records and should not be asked for the same.
