State Level Information
Public access to public records of governmental bodies in the state of Minnesota is guaranteed by the Minnesota Data Practices Act.
The Minnesota Data Practices Act "establishes a presumption that government data are public and are accessible by the public for both inspection and copying unless there is federal law, a state statute, or a temporary classification of data that provides that certain data are not public." - Minnesota Statutes, 13.01
According to the statutes anyone may request public records and they are further entitled to having someone explain the information to them should they not fully understand it.

Court Record Resources
Data on criminal convictions in the state of Minnesota are public for 15 years following the completion the sentence. Public information includes:
- offense
- court of conviction
- date of conviction
- sentence information
This information does not include arrest data, juvenile records, criminal history records from other states, federal data or data on convictions where the sentence was served longer than 15 years ago.
Private data may be obtained through an Informed Consent Procedure or you may request a copy of your public and private criminal history information record either by mail or in person at the BCA office in St Paul.
